Being a Guest on the Design Perspectives Podcast

As an interior designer passionate about sharing knowledge and experiences, I had the honor of being a guest on the Design Perspectives Podcast. In episode 104, hosted by Gail M. Davis, we discussed various aspects of the design industry, including working with clients, the challenges designers face, and the importance of being an advocate for clients. It was an incredible opportunity to connect with fellow designers, share insights, and contribute to the design community.

Design Perspectives: A Creative Journey with Pamela Durkin

Growing up in the “dark ages,” as I like to call it, I had the opportunity to take a home economics class in high school. It was during this time that I was introduced to the concept of interior design by a practicing interior designer. The idea of combining creativity with technical skills fascinated me and spoke to both sides of my brain. From that moment, I knew that interior design was my calling.

Building a Successful Business

After pursuing my education in interior design, I embarked on a journey to build my own design firm. Like many entrepreneurs, I faced challenges along the way. However, I quickly learned the importance of being selective in the clients I worked with.

I discovered that taking on every project that came my way led to stress and compromised the quality of my work. Realizing this, I made a conscious decision to work with a limited and exclusive group of clients each year. By focusing on clients who align with my style and values, I am able to provide exceptional customer service and produce my best work.

The Value of Advocacy

One of the core values I bring to my design practice is being an advocate for my clients. Many clients come to me feeling uncertain and worried about who will truly have their best interests at heart. As a professional, I make it a point to educate my clients, provide them with options, and offer my expert opinion. I prioritize their needs and ensure they feel supported throughout the design process.

Embracing Creativity and Memory Points

In my work, I emphasize the importance of creativity and memory points. Design should be a thoughtful blend of aesthetics, functionality, and personal touches that evoke emotions and memories. By infusing creativity into every project, I create spaces that not only look beautiful but also tell a unique story.

The Power of Communication and Networking

To succeed in the design industry, effective communication and networking are key. I have invested time in building strong relationships with trade showrooms, builders, and building managers. These relationships not only generate regular referrals but also provide a network of like-minded professionals.

I believe in over-communicating with clients and referral sources. By keeping in touch regularly, I ensure that their needs are met and that they are confident in my ability to deliver. It is through open and consistent communication that lasting client relationships are built.

Coaching Designers for Success

Designing spaces that inspire and satisfy clients is the driving force behind my passion for interior design. Through an unwavering commitment to quality, customer advocacy, and creative design, I continue to create environments that exceed expectations. I am honored to have been a guest on the Design Perspectives Podcast, and I invite you to join me on this exciting journey. Let’s explore the intersection of design, creativity, and business together.
