Breaking the Feast or Famine Cycle in Your Design Business

Are you a designer who’s feeling the pressure of juggling too many projects sometimes, while other times you’re anxiously waiting for the next one to come in? I get it, managing a design business can feel like a rollercoaster. In this post, I’ll share strategies to help you smooth out the ups and downs based on the tips I discussed in my latest podcast episode. We’ll talk about effective client acquisition, the value of always being marketing, and leveraging strong referral sources. Let’s dive in and get your business humming along smoothly!

ABM: Always Be Marketing

One of the most fundamental things for a successful design business is the concept of always being marketing—or as I like to say, ABM. I know, I know, you’re probably thinking, “Pam, I’m a designer, not a marketer!” Believe me, I hear you. But the truth is, integrating marketing into your daily routine can take your business from sporadic to steady.

Spending just 15 minutes a day on marketing activities—whether it’s sending out a few emails, making a quick phone call, or posting on social media—can make a world of difference. This little bit of effort keeps you fresh in the minds of potential clients and referral sources, helping you avoid those dreaded dry spells.

Building a Strong Network of Referral Sources

Referrals are gold in the design business. They convert into paying clients more often and usually lead to bigger, better projects. So how do you get more of these golden opportunities? It’s all about building and maintaining strong relationships.

Start by making a list of all your vendor contacts, reps, and industry friends. Prioritize this list based on who knows you best and can provide high-quality leads. Focus on the top ten people to start with. These are your go-to individuals for regular check-ins and updates.

You might worry, “Won’t I look desperate if I’m constantly asking for referrals?” Not at all! In fact, reaching out shows that you’re organized and proactive. Craft your message to highlight mutual benefits. Let your contacts know what kinds of projects you’re looking for and offer to help them in return. It’s all about collaboration, not desperation.

Handling More Opportunities Than You Can Manage

An amazing problem to have is too many opportunities coming your way. Imagine having to choose between several great projects instead of scrambling for just one. This gives you the luxury to pick the ones that best align with your business goals and creative aspirations.

To manage this, have a set system in place for evaluating potential projects. Look at factors like profitability, alignment with your brand, and your current workload. This way, you can make informed decisions and focus on projects that propel your business forward.

The Give and Take of Referral Relationships

Referral relationships should never be one-sided. While it’s awesome to receive referrals, it’s equally important to give back. Ask your contacts about the types of projects they’re looking for and keep them in mind. Whenever you come across opportunities or useful resources, share them.

Being a valuable resource ensures a reciprocal relationship. Your contacts will be more likely to send opportunities your way if they see you as someone who adds value to their business as well. It’s a win-win!

Proactive Planning for Future Opportunities

Timing is everything. Always be ‘priming the pump’ by planting seeds for future projects even while you’re handling current ones. Regularly touch base with your top contacts, keeping them updated about your availability and the kinds of projects you’re interested in.

By laying the groundwork early, you can guarantee a steady flow of work, minimizing the stress of wondering where your next project will come from. This proactive approach lets you fill your pipeline with the projects you truly want to pursue.

Integrating marketing into your routine, building solid referral relationships, and proactively planning your pipeline can turn your design business into an ever-growing powerhouse. A bit of consistent effort goes a long way. Remember, it’s all about making your business work for you, not the other way around.
