Have you ever felt like you’re on the edge of breaking through to the next level in your design business, but consistent projects just aren’t flowing your way? If so, then welcome to the Six Figure Designer Podcast, where we delve into the essential techniques that can help you pay yourself, attract great clients, and break through that five-figure ceiling. In this episode, we explore the reasons behind my passion for design and share insights into my journey from a hobby to a hundred K and beyond.
Discovering the Perfect Blend of Creativity and Technical Skills
Over three decades ago, during a high school home economics class, I had a life-changing encounter with interior design. The combination of creativity and technical skills captivated me, and I realized it was the perfect medium to express my artistic inclinations. This fusion of artistic expression, technical know-how, and my passion for art, fashion, and theater made interior design an irresistible path for me to explore.
Nurturing a Career in Design
Choosing a career in design often involves stepping away from conventional expectations. I started my career in commercial design but faced the challenge of juggling work and motherhood. In the wake of 9/11, I made the bold decision to leave my job and venture into starting my own business. This unconventional path laid the foundation for the successes and lessons that followed.
Navigating the Challenges and Discovering Growth
As an entrepreneur, I encountered numerous obstacles along the way. Among them were finding my ideal clients, striking a balance between residential and commercial projects, and adapting to a new location. Despite these challenges, I found an amazing client who appreciated my expertise and valued my contributions. This experience fueled my desire to attract similar projects and clients, and I embarked on a journey to elevate my business to new heights.
The Power of Boundaries and Mentorship
Pursuing continuous education became a crucial factor in my success. Through impactful courses and participation in a mastermind group, I gained insights on proactive business strategies. As a creative, offering unique perspectives during brainstorming sessions sparked conversations about coaching and mentoring. Although I initially identified solely as a designer, the encouragement and recognition from my peers planted a seed of possibility in my mind.
