Stop Waiting for Referrals: How to Build Profitable Relationships that Actually Bring You Clients
Forget social media, let’s get the right people talking about you. Hey there, it’s Pam! If you’re tired of waiting for random referrals or thinking you just need more Instagram followers to get the right clients, this one’s for you. In this post, I’m shining a light on some real talk from my latest Six Figure Designer podcast episode, sharing what actually works when it comes to building the kind of relationships that lead to dream projects and a business that pays you well. I’ll break down the biggest mistakes I see, what to do instead, and show you my favorite low-pressure scripts to help get you out there (without feeling pushy or awkward). Let’s dive in!
Why More Followers Won’t Pay the Bills
We’ve all heard it: “Just grow your followers!” But let’s be real, most of my best clients have come from referrals, not reels. You don’t need the whole internet to know you…you need the right people talking about you in the rooms where the real opportunities happen.
That’s why I’m obsessed with referral systems, real-life relationships, and reputation-building. When you set these up the right way, you’re no longer sitting around hoping for the phone to ring or taking on every random project that lands in your inbox.
Reaching Out: What Not to Do (And a Better Way)
Let’s talk about something I see all the time: Designers either hide and do nothing because they don’t know what to say, or they go in way too hot, basically proposing marriage on the first coffee date.
True story: One of my coaching clients approached a local art gallery hoping to team up. The owner basically said, “Sure, but why don’t you bring me some business first.” Ouch, right? But here’s the thing, I wasn’t fazed, and you shouldn’t be either.
Most people want to know you can deliver before they hand over their reputation or rolodex. Makes sense! But that doesn’t mean you chicken out OR bulldoze ahead asking for favors.
How to Give Before You Get (Without Feeling Weird)
Here’s my favorite move: Start by giving, not by asking. If you can’t refer a client yet, think about how else you can help.
Back to my client, the gallery invited her to an event, so instead of asking to co-host or pitch her services, I suggested she offer to bring along some fab local designers who might also become future gallery clients. She reached out to the owner and asked permission before inviting anyone. This way:
- She showed she’s a team player.
- The gallery gets more exposure (which is their #1 goal).
- And she looks professional, thoughtful, and generous.
This builds trust fast. It helps you stand out, and it starts the relationship off on the right foot, zero pushiness required.
Easy Scripts You Can Steal
I know, the hardest part can be figuring out what to actually say. Here are a couple of simple, low-pressure scripts I love:
- “Hey, I saw your upcoming event, it looks amazing! I’d love to come, and if you’re open to it, would you mind if I brought a couple of designer friends along who I think would love your work?”
- “Hi [Name], I really enjoyed our chat about [xyz]. Did you end up moving forward with that project? Would be great to catch up!”
Notice how it’s never a hard sell? You’re just connecting, thinking of them, and offering something low-key that benefits them.
Relationship Building: Think Long Game, Not Quick Hits
The best design businesses aren’t built on one-off referrals from random people. They come from trusted partners, people you get to know, who see your value, and who send you amazing clients for years.
When the good referrals start rolling in, you can get picky, stick to your boundaries, and only take projects that truly light you up. That’s the power of playing the long game.
Don’t Be the Best Kept Secret
I promise you don’t have to be everywhere, do everything, or collect thousands of followers. Take a breath, pick one or two vendors or industry folks you admire, and reach out with a genuine offer to help, or just a thoughtful “hello.”
Let your relationships do the heavy lifting. Before you know it, those consistent, high-quality referrals will start showing up. That’s how you build a business you’re actually proud of (and one that pays the bills).
