Because a Business You Love Needs a Little Maintenance, Too
Hey designer friends! It’s that middle-of-the-year stretch where everything starts to blur together, the dreams of January feel ages ago, and the overwhelm starts to creep back in. I just recorded a podcast episode about hitting the reset button right about now, so I wanted to break it down here too. Let’s check in, be honest about what’s working and what isn’t, and make sure your business actually feels good, not just busy. Grab your coffee, because we’re about to do a little business spring cleaning (no influencer nonsense required).
Why a Mid-Year Reset is a Must
I don’t know about you, but when July rolls around, I often realize I’ve been going at full speed without stopping to look up. It’s like all those good intentions from January got buried under emails, meetings, and life stuff. If you’re feeling pulled in too many directions, you’re not alone, I talked about this exact thing on the latest episode of the podcast. Let’s give ourselves permission to slow down, catch our breath, and actually check how things are going.
Remember That “New Year, New Me” Energy?
Let’s take a hot second to remember how we felt in January, when everything seemed possible. Maybe you even picked a “word of the year” or started a fresh notebook (I definitely did). But now, halfway through, it’s easy to realize those boundaries or habits you were excited about have slipped a little… or a lot. Don’t beat yourself up! This happens to ALL of us. The real magic is in noticing it and making a few shifts to get back on track.
The Three-Part Mid-Year Audit
Here’s the quick exercise I swear by to get focused again:
1. What’s Actually Working?
First, give yourself some credit, seriously. What have you done well so far this year? Which projects, clients, or systems feel fun and energizing instead of exhausting? We forget to high-five ourselves for the good stuff. For me, sticking to my “No Mondays full of meetings” rule has been a lifesaver for my creativity. What’s your win?
2. What Needs a Tweak?
Not everything is broken, some stuff just needs a little tightening up. Which parts of your process are “meh,” but probably only need a tune-up, not a total overhaul? Think about where things feel clunky, stressful, or not as smooth as they could be. Maybe it’s communication with clients or batching your admin days so emails don’t eat your life. Pick one thing to make easier.
3. What Needs to Go (for Real)?
And then there’s the messy drawer of your business, the things you’re tolerating, the people or tasks that zap your energy, the stuff that quietly snuck back in when you weren’t looking. What can you pull off your plate? Maybe it’s chasing late invoices or letting a boundary slide with a high-maintenance client. Ditching even one “nope” will free up tons of mental space.
Reality Check – Look at the Data
Don’t forget to pull a report, even if it’s just a back-of-the-napkin rundown. See what kinds of projects or clients are actually moving the needle (and which ones just drain you). I love doing this at the six-month mark because “the numbers” don’t lie and they might surprise you!
Less Is More, Really
So often we think, “I’ll just add more, do more, hustle harder.” But most of the time? We actually need to refine, not add. Clean up the business a little, pull the weeds, and create some space to breathe. Trust me, future you will thank you.
Let’s Reset, Together
If you’re ready for your own little mid-year reset, here are two things you can do right now:
- Share your biggest “something’s gotta go” moment with me on Instagram. I want to hear what you’re letting go of in your business, tag me @PamelaDurkin or DM me and let’s cheer each other on.
- Go dust off your January goals or intentions. Seriously, go find that notebook or note on your phone and take 10 minutes. Then, let me know if anything surprised you because sometimes, the biggest breakthroughs come from remembering where we started.
We’re in this together, here’s to finishing strong, on our terms!
